- What is Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)?
PEF, or Product Environmental Footprint, is a method developed by the European Commission to measure the environmental performance of products throughout their life cycle. The goal is to provide a standardized, science-based approach to assess and communicate environmental impacts, helping companies, consumers, and policymakers understand and reduce their environmental impact.
PEF considers 16 environmental impact categories, including climate change, water use, land use, resource depletion, and more. While PEF provides the overarching LCA methodology, specific rules for certain industries and product categories are provided through PEFCRs (Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules). These are detailed guidelines for specific product groups to ensure assessments are consistent across similar products.
